What is Die Casting?

Die-Casting is used to make metal parts with the help of mold or dies. Here, the metal first melts into liquid. Then, pressure is applied to this molten liquid to inject it into the mold cavity. The liquid attains the shape of a mold. This mold is mainly comprised of two halves. These halves are made up of heat-resistant steel grades. So, they allow the formation of a cavity. Here the liquid metal undergoes high pressure, i.e. ranging between 1000-20,000 psi. As, a result, the molten liquid attains the shape of a die cavity. Additionally, die casting has two types, i.e. hot chamber dies casting and cold chamber die casting. Both kinds have a wide scope of applications in the manufacturing of metal parts. They are relevantly the same instead of one additional process.

Cold Chamber Die Casting

The cold chamber die-casting process only works with metals that have high melting points. So, they may include aluminum, brass, copper, and alloy. The cold chamber die casting has the same functioning as a hot chamber die casting. They both vary with only one additional step, i.e. ladled with a separate chamber. In a hot chamber, the molten metal is directly injected into the die cavity. But here the molten metal is first injected into a separate chamber, using a ladle. After that, it is injected into the die cavity.

Hot Chamber Die Casting

It is also known for its second name, gooseneck casting. It requires high pressure to inject the molten metal into a mold. So, it works for material that can melt easily, or have a low melting point. The highly used metals include zinc, tin, and lead. Moreover, hot chamber dies casting needs molten metal for continuous flow and gives rapid cycle time. So, it is effective for batch production of metal parts.
